As portas se abriram! Premio Nobel ai vou eu!
Muita ambicao e pretencao da minha parte em pensar que eu um dia vou chegar ao premio Nobel ne? Mas te garanto que hoje eu estou a um passo a frente de muitas pessoas no mundo. Tudo comecou no final da minha aula de Microbiologia na universidade. Enquanto eu guardava as minhas coisas, todo mundo saiu da classe e eu pedi ao meu professor pra me contar mais sobre a pesquisa que ele estava fazendo. Meu professor:
Dr. Bob Metcalf da aulas a 30 anos na universidade e eh um professor maravilhoso. Ha 25 anos atras Dr. Metcalf se interessou por um "fogao solar" inventado por duas mulheres no Arizona. Ele adquiriu um "fogao solar" e comecou a cozinhar todas as refeicoes dele com um fogao solar durante o verao aqui em Sacramento. Como ele tambem da aula de
Microbiologia e comida, sabia que a
agua nao precisa ser fervida para matar as bacterias. Na verdade a agua precisa ser mantida a temperatura de
65ºC por 15 minutos e isso eh suficiente pra matar as bacterias. Com isso, Dr. Metcalf testou o "fogao solar" contra as bacterias na agua e viu que efetivamente todas as bacterias morriam. Entao ele decidiu se involver com o governo do Kenya e a Tanzania, dois paises muito pobres na Africa que sofrem com a falta de recursos (madeira) para cozinhar assim como sofrem de um serio problema com a contaminacao da agua. Dr. Metcalf desenvolveu um "indicador" de temperatura (avisaria quando a agua esta a 65ºC) assim como um fogao solar simples feito com apenas 3 dolares:
Papel aluminio, caixa de papelao, sacola plastica transparente, e um pedaco de vidro. Forra-se a caixa com o papelao por dentro, coloca-se a comida dentro da sacola plastica e coloca-se o vidro encima e deixe no sol por algumas horas ate que a comida esteja pronta. Enfim... usando esse fogao solar, as pessoas no Kenya poderiam aquecer a agua para pasteuriza-la, matando todas as bacterias, assim como cozinhar e nao precisar comprar lenha ou derrubar as arvores (ja escassas) para obter lenha. Dr. Metcalf usa de um metodo de testar a agua sem precisar de um laboratorio, usando pedacos de papel (com produtos quimicos e organicos) apenas ele testa a agua e no dia seguinte ja se tem resultados. Nos ultimos 20 anos ele tem trabalhado com isso, ja provou a eficiencia do fogao solar contra as bacterias e tudo isso com a juda de alunos da faculdade e com o proprio dinheiro dele. AGora Dr. Metcalf trabalha com agentes de saude publica nesses paises e estao testando esse metodo de pasteurizacao da agua em outras comunidades.
Como eu entrei nessa?? Bom... sempre quis fazer pesquisa e no semestre que vem poderei juntar-me ao time dele de pesquisa e ajuda-lo em outros testes. Dr. Metcalf esta pra publicar os resultados da pesquisa dele e acha que isso vai ser um BUM mundial, acha que as autoridades vao investir nesse projeto ja que a eficacia esta provada. Dr. Metcalf esteve no Rio de Janeiro em 1992 para a Conferencia do Earth Summit, promovida pela Organizacao das Nacoes Unidas e trabalhou com purificacao da agua nas favelas e comunidades pobres do interior do estado. Ele quer me ensinar a usar os equipamentos para os testes de agua (os papeis) assim como
fazer fogao solar pra distrubuir para as pessoas e ensinar ao departamento de saude e agua no Brasil como usar os simples testes que ele usa.

Everything started at the end of my Microbiology class at the university. While I was packing everybody left the class and I took the opportunity to ask my teacher to tell me a little more about the research project he was working on. My professor,
Dr. Robert Metcalf teaches at CSUS for 30 years now and he is an excellent professor. 25 years ago Dr. Metcalf got interested in this "solar cooker" invented by 2 women in Arizona. He bought a solar cooker for himself and started cooking all his meals this way, throughout the whole summer in Sacramento. Since he also teaches food Microbiology, he knew that
water does not have to be boiled in order to kill all the bacteria. In fact, water only needs to be
heated to 65ºC for 15 minutes. That is sufficient to kill the bacteria thus pasteurizing water. With that in mind, Dr. Metcalf tested pasteurizing water with his solar cooker and effectively pasteurized water. He decided to get involved in a project with governmental agencies in Kenya and Tanzania, 2 very poor countries in Africa which suffer from lack of resources (wood for fire, money to purchase wood) as well as water contamination. Dr. Metcalf helped develop a temperature indicator which indicates when the temperature of 65ºC is obtained. He also developed a "cheaper version" of the solar cooker using materials that would cost 3 dollars:
Aluminum foil, cardboard boxes, clear plastic bag and a piece of glass. How does it work? Place the aluminum foil into the inside of the box, place food inside plastic bag and place the glass on top of it. Leave it in the sun for a couple hours and your food/water would be ready for consumption. So... by using this solar cooker, people in Kenya (and other countries) can heat up their water, pasturize it and cook without spending their meager incomes on fuel and without having to walk for miles to collect wood. Dr. Metcalf also uses of simple techniques to do water testing without having to use fancy laboratory equipment. In the past 20 years, he has been studying solar cooking and water pasteurization funded by his own income and with the help of students from CSUS. As of today, Dr. Metcalf works with govenmental agancies in Tanzania and Kenya to promote the use of solar cookers.
How did I get into this?? Well... I always wanted to participate in research and next semester I will be able to join his research team. Dr. Metcalf is about to publish his research and he thinks this will be a revolution. He thinks authorities will finally invest in this project since its efficacy has already been proven. Also, Dr. Metcalf was in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, at the Earth Summit conference promoted by the United Nations. He worked with water pasteurization in the slums as well as poor communities in the countryside of Brazil. He wants to teach me how to use the equipment so that I can
test water myself while I am in Brazil and report to him,
make the simple solar cookers and show the population how to use it as well as share this wonderful information with the Brazilian authorities.
