Last year we went to Utah just for the skiing experience. As you might know, the snow in Utah is very different from the snow in California. It is lighter because it has less water.. plus, the get dumped with a lot of snow every year. The mountains near Salt Lake city get 500 inches average. More than any other ski resort area (yes! more than Colorado!). Anyway... skiing in Utah. Like last year, this time we went to Snowbird again because it is an awesome resort. Very steep, very good runs. Snowbird has a snow tunnel which cuts thru the mountain so that you can ski on the other side. We had to try that..
The tunnel at Snowbird - they play music inside the tunnel. There are also some pictures of the construction and some signs with tunnel info. We stand up on a conveyor belt that takes us to the other side of the tunnel.
We went to Snowbird on the 31st of December. Although the lifts closed at 4:30pm, at 6pm they had a torch parade to celebrate the new year. We waited and watched that. This is a picture of Kuba wishing the Kania family a happy new year (they were in the Dominican Republic... wearing shorts!)
Near 0F outside! It is weird to spend NYE in the winter time in the US. I am used to wearing shorts at the beach back home and over here you cannot even wear something nice because the jacket will cover it up anyway. I was wearing 3 pairs of pants!
A festinha de fim de ano. Umas 300 pessoas vieram esquiando morro abaixo com umas tochas. Muito bonito. Pena que a foto nao saiu legal.
There were about 300 skiers coming down the hill with torches. It was very nice! Too bad the pictures did not come out good.
NYE in Salt Lake City - after the party at the ski resort we went back to the city to watch the fireworks at midnight.
On the 1st of January we went skiing at Powder Mountain, a little farther from Salt Lake city. As the name suggests, this place had TONS of powder! It was awesome. The mountain was not nearly as steep as snowbird, but the conditions were great. And it snowed a little while we were there. The best thing, though, is.. I tried the old-school ski lift. One was just a little plastic piece attached to the main cable that you hold on to (Easy), but the other one you had to put between your legs. Needless to say, Kuba kept telling me that I was going to fall on the lift and telling me horrifying stories. I did fine... a little shaky at first but I made it all the way to the top. Since it was January 1st and most people are either hung over or spending the day with their families, the place was totally empty! If we had to share a run with another person it was already too crowded! heheh :) I could get spoiled by that.
Night-skiing? No problem! Powder Mountain had a whole mountain lit up for that.
On January 2nd we went skiing again! This time at Park City resort, where the 2002 winter olympic games took place. The place was huge!
The weather was not that nice in Park City. Snow and wind...
Park City also had night skiing and this time we stayed until the very end.
Unfortunately there was a lightning that hit somewhere close to the ski resort and power went out for a good 15 minutes. Kuba and I were sitting on the lift when that happened. I thought it was great. It is soo rare to have lightning strikes in the winter time when it is snowing. We were doing everything your science teacher told you not to: Sitting on the highest place of the mountain (we were near the top), on a metal bench in the dark (we could not see anything! It was like total darkness). When we reached the top the ski patrol guy told us not to go anywhere because they were not sure there would be another power surge. They told us there might be a possibility of taking us down the mountain by snowmobile (I was really really hoping for that - Cool!) In the mean time, I played in the snow. Finally after 30 minutes they let us ski down the mountain
After cleaning the car 3 times - there was a lot of snow on top at first. Then, it kept snowing very hard and very fast - I decided to take some pictures.
Going back to the hotel in SLC. Lots of snow on the road (6-12 in), very strong wind and the car dancing on the road. The longest 30 miles of my life.
